A disciplined glance at tools

Sometimes, objects fallen out of daily use come into our hands. We hold on to them weighed by the experience of them—both past and yet close at hand. Their silent solidity speaks to us of the lives we once lived and the indispensable premise for our lives today. These objects are icons. Hence, to handle them now is to bring into the light those who have used them and to participate in their reality.

Gatt’Bigio from Mugnano told the story of Attilio and his willow grove. From the atrium of death, Attillo bequeathed the willow grove to his kin. “When I’m no longer here, keep them in place for a few more years”, said Attilio who had done his part to continue a millennial history. The grove was the source of a versatile material from which Attilio shaped his life. In his competent hands, the willow bound what needed to be bound; wove what needed to be stitched; helped produce all that was needed to make a living. His bequest placed a seed in the heart of his kin. Their care for the willow grove will shape their gestures which not only memorialise him but make them walk in his footsteps.

The fabrication and use of tools for the activities necessary to living is specific to a place. The history of its tools is integral to understanding how a particular place has been inhabited. The present expropriates knowledge and know-how and desiccates them of their living sap by the logic of efficiency that sterilizes what once nourished. The traces tools leave behind, whether as scars on matter or in ritualised gestures, puts this present into question.

From the willow, an innumerable series of containers were obtained, from crino to bacajio and a range of basket types. A small basket for the eggs, a sturdy basket for the grape harvest or for the olives were made from the unpeeled willow. The linen basket required fine workmanship using peeled willow and smooth edges. The breakfast basket used at the time of the beating of the grain had to be of equally refined workmanship, appropriate to the importance of the action.

In addition to the containers, another class of fundamental tools were the sieves (setelli) which separate what is good from what is to be discarded. The crevello separated the olives from the leaves, the giuiaia separated the grain from the chaff, and various other setelli, the majority of which were round and separated the seeds from impurities. What was good was meant for the table or for next year’s sowing. What was discarded, often sifted again to recover any useful remnants, was not waste but given to the animals or scattered over the fields. Sieving was an act of discernment (scernire) akin to discerning the phases of the moon that were propitious for sowing.

Fire deserves its own and different place. Enclosed in a womb, it allows you to shape and transform matter. Domesticated in an oven fire bakes bread, in the forge fire X bends iron, and finally in the hearth, fire dispels the harshness of winter and allows our stories to be shared.

This Stuff, which today’s everyday experience perceives as obsolete, opens up a space where the miraculous palliatives of hypermodernity to the human condition can be judged for what they are and what they do. Between unenthusiastically accepting them or enduring them, there is always the possibility of avoiding some of these palliatives, with the awareness that such renunciation does not correspond to a loss.
